Being stuck at home doesn’t have to be boring! Enjoy some precious moments with your family and try out these 5 ideas to do during quarantine.
I’ve been pretty silent about the global situation going on but there’s just not a whole lot for me to say. It breaks my heart but there’s nothing more I can do then stay at home and be informed so that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do. Since I am already a home school mom our daily routine hasn’t changed much but that doesn’t mean there’s things I don’t miss about a “normal” week.
I look forward to the Sundays I can go back to church and work with the youth again. I miss our home school group, story hour at the library and Mexican restaurants but you know what I miss the most?
Family.
I long for the days that I can see my sweet grandparents and hang out at Mom’s without fearing that one of us will get sick. I know that day will come but it sure feels like forever.
Despite everything I miss about normality I am still thankful. Quarantine has forced us all to be so much closer than ever before. It’s brought us to trying new things and enjoying each and every moment.
Although I enjoy my alone time you just can’t beat family activities, especially during a quarantine!

Kayaking
If you have never been kayaking then you are certainly missing out! We bought our kayaks last year and have had more fun with them than I thought possible. I wasn’t too keen on purchasing kayaks in the first place but it was well worth the investment.
We live super close to a lake and only 5 minutes from a large creek that’s perfect for kayaking. The thing I love most about being on the water is how peaceful it is. You can paddle like a mad man or slowly cruise and listen to the sounds of nature.
Recently we took the kids on their first official ride down the creek. The smiles on their faces were worth everything to me! It should go without saying but life jackets are essential for going out on kayaks no matter how shallow the water.
Fishing
Fishing is another wonderful activity to do together as a family. Even the smallest of children are often delighted at the sight of a fish! Even I get a nice adrenaline rush while reeling in what I think is a monster fish only to find out it was just a small one who struggled well. Ha!
Combine fishing and kayaking for an even bigger day out. Be sure and pack a small picnic and drinks with you though for the full package. Whether you fish at a creek, family pond, or even out on the lake it will surely be a day well spent.
Bike Riding
Biking is something I’ve only more recently taken an interest in. I’m so glad we live in a rural area with plenty of low traffic side roads because otherwise I’d be terrified! It’s finally started to warm up enough to enjoy biking so we try to get them out as much as possible. It’s such great exercise and all around a fun activity for the whole family.
Wyatt learned how to ride without training wheels last summer and he sure loves to see how fast he can go. Wren took over his old balance bike we got him for his 2nd birthday. I can’t recommend balance bikes enough! They cut the time on training wheels immensely and you may find that your child never needs them at all.
Gardening
My fourth idea to do during quarantine is to try out gardening. I wish I could say that I am a professional gardener with the greenest of thumbs but that would be a lie. This is only my 2nd year of gardening but everyone has to start somewhere.
In today’s time I think gardening is more important than ever and it’s important to show our children where food comes from. There’s no better way to teach then by experiencing first hand. So far we have strawberries and cabbage plants in the ground but hope to get the rest planted in early May.
I’ve been eager to use our own compost for some time now and it’s finally ready! We started our compost bins a year ago and sadly it wasn’t ready for last year’s garden but now we have an abundance and I’m ready to put it to good use.
A Quarantine Cookout
The last idea to do during quarantine is to have a cookout. We have a picnic table outside our home that I absolutely love! It’s used a bit to do school work and sometimes for picnics but what I love most of all is having a cookout.
We bought a cheap grill sometime last year and it has been wonderful! Just give me a nice seasoned burger, fries and a glass of sweet tea and I’m all set. You can’t go wrong though with roasting marshmallows and eating a few s’mores for dessert.
