Sugar scrubs are one the the easiest skin care DIY’s out there! It’s just as simple as mixing up equal parts of sugar and oil. Then you get the pleasure of trying to decide what scent combination to go with. If you are like me, that’s a tough one.
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with everything apple. I shared my maple bourbon apple butter recipe a couple of weeks ago and as expected I ate the whole thing within a week. Maybe it’s because I’m sad about eating all the apple butter or possibly I’m just all about fall, but I’m not off the apple train just yet.
For this reason, I decided to whip up a batch of apple cider sugar scrub and it smells DELICIOUS! Just don’t eat it like my mother in law did- true story.

Ingredients
The ingredients for this recipe are incredibly simple and likely you already have them all at home.
You just need equal parts of sugar and oil. I done 1/2 cup of brown and 1/2 cup of white sugar but you can absolutely just use white if that’s all you have. I personally just like the aesthetic appeal of the brown sugar. If you decide to go with all white you’ll need to do a whole cup of course.
For the 1/2 cup of oil I use unrefined coconut oil because that’s just what I had here at home. Unless it’s fractioned coconut oil it will harden as it cools. The consistency is likely not what you’ll be used to with a sugar scrub but your hands and the heat of the water melts it all down anyway. If you’d like more of a classic consistency I’d go with something else. Fractioned coconut oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil and grapeseed oil would make great alternatives.
Last, you’ll need essential oils. For the apple cider sugar scrub you’ll do 12 drops of Stress Away, 8 drops of Orange and 5 drops of Thieves. Each of these are from Young Living Essential Oils.
Finishing Touches
The instructions couldn’t get any easier because all you do is mix everything together!
You can store your sugar scrub in an 8 oz jar or divide it into 4 oz jars like I did. If you are giving these as gifts or if you are just fancy like that then add some finishing touches. Tie a ribbon or decorative string around the lid and add a cinnamon stick. Adding a personalized label would be a neat idea as well.
Why Use A Sugar Scrub?
Sugar scrubs have the ability to make you feel like your hands have just been to a spa but without the cost. The main purpose of sugar scrubs are to exfoliate the skin to remove dead cells and leave it silky soft. From the words of my husband, “This feels unnatural!” To a man used to getting his hands dirty I guess it does! It left his hands so soft he didn’t know what to think about it.
Sugar scrubs are most commonly used on the hands but can actually be used anywhere on the body. They make a great facial scrub and can do wonders on the feet. I personally leave a jar in the shower for easy access.
