Just the looks of this body butter are enough to put anyone in a trance! It looks like butter and feels like butter but smells way better. If you are a fan of anything that smells like chocolate then you absolutely have to try this out! For those that have never used cocoa butter before you are missing out. It’s basically the fat that comes from cocoa beans and it smells almost exactly like dark chocolate.
Not only does this natural whipped body butter smell amazing, but it is also super healthy for your skin. If you have really dry skin then you know just how important skin care is. Every time I complain about having itchy legs my mother in law always asks if I’m applying lotion. You know, she is usually right!
I haven’t used typical store bought lotion or body butter in quite a while. Personally I love knowing exactly what ingredients are in the products I use and it’s so much fun making myself. DIY natural whipped body butter make awesome gifts for family and friends.
They would go well in a gift basket or even by themselves with handmade labels.

The Ingredients
1/4 cup unrefined coconut oil
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup raw cocoa butter
15 drops essential oil (optional)
How To Make Natural Whipped Body Butter
The first step in making whipped body butter is to measure out the ingredients. I find it easier to chop up the cocoa butter into smaller pieces because this will cut down on melting time. Do NOT add the essential oils yet during this step!
Next you can begin melting everything together on stove top. I make my own double boiler by filling a pot with water and resting a glass bowl on top. Set the stove on medium heat and once everything is melted and combined you can remove. Please be careful here because I have totally burned myself on hot steam many times!
Place the mixture into the freezer to cool. You don’t want the mixture to be rock solid but more like what I call mashed potato consistency. (see photo above)
Once you get the desired consistency go ahead and remove from the freezer and add in the essential oils if you choose to. Cocoa butter has an amazing smell all alone but it’s so fun experimenting with different scents. Anything that pairs well with chocolate would be fabulous for whipped body butter!
Personally, I have been enjoying peppermint. My husband thinks it smells exactly like a York peppermint patty and I would have to agree. I also get dark chocolate peppermint bark vibes. Other essential oils that pair nicely would be orange and lavender.
The last step is to whip everything together and it’s oh so satisfying! If you have a whip attachment on your mixer then I would go with that for sure. The longer you whip the fluffier the body butter will become so I like to go for at least 5 minutes.
Once you are finished whipping then you are ready to scoop out into containers. This is a single cup recipe but if you have smaller 4 oz jars like I do then you can go that route as well. I made this batch for me and also my sweet mother in law.
Special Notes
Most natural DIY body butters and other lotions have an oily consistency. This doesn’t bother me too much but I’ve read that you can add in a bit of cornstarch to reduce the oily feel. I also find that a little goes a long way and helps the oil absorb into the skin nicely.
Using shea butter in replace of cocoa butter can also work. I’ve used shea butter in my DIY recipes many times before and it’s a wonderful substitute. You could even use both if you’d like but I’m so obsessed with the smell of chocolate I decided to go all cocoa butter.
Please be aware of citrus oils such as orange if you use them. They are photosensitive which means that they can cause burns to your skin if exposed to sunlight. If you choose to use these kind of oils then applying nightly would be a good idea.
