No one likes getting sick but these cold remedies make it a bit more manageable. Plus, who doesn’t love something both simple and all natural?
A couple of weeks ago we all came down with our first cold of the year. First my son had it and we all know kids love to spread their germs! I’ve never been the type of person to take pain medication, even as a teenager. I liked to avoid it at all costs and only took Tylenol if absolutely necessary. Silly me though never tried anything to manage the symptoms and always suffered through it.
It doesn’t have to be that way!
If you prefer not to take medication, there’s still hope for managing your symptoms! Allow me to share my tried and true favorites.

For an Irritated Throat
I can always tell when I’m getting sick because it starts with a tickle in my throat that progresses into irritation. These days anymore it doesn’t take long for me to look for relief which brings me to the first remedy!
Gargle Salt Water
I know everyone has heard of this one, but it does work! Warm up a cup of water and stir in half a teaspoon of salt until it fully dissolves. Gargle it for roughly 30 seconds and then spit it out. Repeat this process until the salt water mixture is gone.
You can continue doing this throughout the day.
Spoonful of Raw Honey, Lemon & Thieves
This is my absolute favorite way to relieve an irritated throat! I’ll often alternate it with the salt water gargle to keep comfortable. All you do is scoop out a tablespoon of raw honey and add one drop of each essential oil. I use Lemon and Thieves vitality oils from Young Living Essential Oils.
I instantly get relief from this method! Thieves is an essential oil blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary. At first I didn’t much care for the taste, but now I have grown to love it! It aids in numbing and the honey coats it on the throat.
I prefer to use raw honey because of the added benefits. When you purchase regular, pasteurized honey you have essentially bought a fake. I mean, yes it is still honey but through the process of of pasteurization and processing it destroys all nutritional value. I don’t know about you, but I definitely want to keep all the good stuff!
Warm Cup Of Tea
Sometimes instead of eating a spoonful of honey + the oils, I’ll put them all in tea instead! Any tea will do fine, although I prefer green and herbal teas when I have a cold.
If you don’t have any oils, or prefer to leave them out plain tea would work well too. You could also add a slice of lemon and ginger root to switch things up a bit!
For Congestion
Nothing can make me more miserable with a cold than congestion. I never breathe through my mouth so I struggle a lot with nasal congestion, especially when I’m trying to sleep.
Hot, Steamy Shower
The quickest way to open up my sinuses is by taking a hot, steamy shower. Close the door and stuff towels under the crack if you have to. For added benefits, I like to put a drop or two of RC essential oil near the back of the shower. RC is a blend of spruce, cypress, and 3 different kinds of eucalyptus oils.
Roller Blend of Essential Oils
Throughout the day when I’m feeling stuffy again, I’ll apply a roller bottle of essential oils down the bridge of my nose. There’s a few different combinations you can try. I’ll let you in on my personal favorites!
Blend # 1
- 5 drops of Digize
- 5 drops of RC
- 5 drops of Peppermint
- 30 drops of carrier oil
Blend # 2
- 5 drops of Lavender
- 5 drops of Lemon

- 20 drops of carrier oil
Blend #3 (I use this one for my kids)

For A Cough
Coughing is the most annoying thing about a cold. Its uncomfortable, loud, and seems to linger much longer than other symptoms. Thankfully, there’s ways to help!
Chest Rub
Some of you know that I love to reuse baby food jars. I’ve found several uses for them and one of those is for chest rubs! All you need is a bit of coconut oil and essential oils. Works like a charm! I love to apply on my chest before I go to sleep at night.
- 3 tablespoons of coconut oil
- 2 drops of RC
- 4 drops of Frankincense
- 4 drops of Tea Tree
Diffusing
When sickness runs through the Fox home the diffuser is almost always going! I’ve found it to be the best way to help when one or all of us are hacking up a lung.
Blend #1
- 3 drops of RC
- 2 drops of Peppermint
- 2 drops of Tea Tree
- 1 drop of Frankincense
Blend #2 (Kids Recipe)
- 2 drops of Frankincense
- 2 drops of Lemon
- 2 drops of Lavender
