You all, I cannot believe my baby boy is old enough for Pre-school! He is only 3 but I have been so eager to begin and it is never too early for learning in my book. I have went back and forth with the idea of homeschooling since he was born. After much reading and discussing with my husband we felt that homeschooling would fit much better into our lifestyle.
I “formally” began with his lessons last Monday. With a 3 year old I feel that “formally” should be taken VERY lightly. You only have just a few quick minutes to catch their attention and then they have moved on to something else. I’ve learned to make his lessons short but to the point. We spend the rest of our time learning through play because I can promise anyone that your 3 year old will get much more out of it then sitting at a table drowning in worksheets. I am not following a specific curriculum this year simply because I do not find it necessary. An assortment of crafting supplies from just about any Dollar General or Walmart will suffice. Use the internet to help brainstorm ideas and you are set!
I work with him Monday-Friday for a couple of hours each day. Our morning routine goes a little something like this…
9 am- music time! We sing, “Days of The Week” and “Months of The Year” as well as any other songs he wants to sing. Right now, he is stuck on “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and “Who Built The Ark.”
9:20 am- Book time! I read him a couple of stories out of his children’s Bible and then he picks out a book related to our letter of the week theme.
9:25 am- He works on 1-2 pages in his Pre-school workbook. Sometimes it is coloring and other times he traces letters and paths. This book is packed full of awesome activities! Would 100% recommend. Click my link below to check it out!
9:35 am- Crafts! I do one craft with him that pertains to the letter of the week. For example, today we made a bunny out of cotton balls. B is for Bunny!
9:55 am- Activity! Last week we made an airplane snack out of bananas, cheerios, and apples.
10:10 am- free time! Typically, around this time he is getting pretty unfocused and all over the place. I give him as long as he wants to be creative and run wild. If you didn’t guess, this is his favorite and usually where the largest messes come into play!
So far, our adventures in homeschooling have been nothing short of awesome! Just when I thought he was not picking up on much he surprised me today with letter A’s drawn in crayon all over the living room wall. I am just praising the Lord it was not in permanent marker! I am beyond excited to see what the next few weeks and months bring out in his learning!
