When I was pregnant with Wyatt I was first introduced to the idea of cloth diapering through one of my favorite YouTube vloggers. I had seen her and a few others doing it and thought it was neat but I never imagined that I would give it a try. I had zero experience with babies and the idea of learning the ropes of cloth diapering seemed quite overwhelming. I just left it at that and never gave it another thought.
Fast forward to a year later. I had a 9 month old who went through more diapers then I care to admit and my golly it was still just the beginning! We were trying to make room in the budget for diapers and it made me half sick to my stomach when I seen the cost ring up. The idea of cloth diapering seemed a little bit better when I realized that it could be a lot cheaper than disposables. I price checked on a few popular cloth diapering websites and nearly fell over. I thought there is no way I can save money. I put the idea on the back burner for a bit and decided I would come back to it.
9 months later I found out I was pregnant with baby number 2! At the time Wyatt was 18 months and far from being potty trained. He was still in disposables and I was so done with buying them month after month. My husband and I were trying to figure out how we could save money and I said something like, “well, if we didn’t have to buy all these diapers it would help.” It was at that time I became more curious of cloth diapering and wanted to know more. I got on Pinterest and started educating myself. I watched a few YouTube videos of some mothers breaking down the cost of cloth diapering vs disposables. I was astonished that it was not a few hundred dollars cheaper to cloth diaper but could be well over $1000! Save the diapers for the next baby and it’s free or sell the diapers after potty training and receive a good chunk of your money back. How amazing?! It did not take much reading to convince me that cloth diapering was the way to go.
I bought my first dozen prefolds and one cloth diaper cover in April of 2017. I was 6 months pregnant with my sweet Wren and so very excited to begin my cloth diaper journey. I got a good deal on a used cloth diaper stash from someone local that following June and immediately started cloth diapering my oldest to practice. Eventually I did end up switching him to 100% cloth! It took some trial and error but I am proud to say that I just jumped in, gave it my all and have not looked back.

My first attempt of putting on a diaper. Doc the teddy was a great dummy!
Ultimately, I did decide to cloth diaper for cost factor only. However, my views have changed and I have grown to love them so much I would do it all over again regardless of our income. Now I never have to worry about how we will pay for diapers, running out of diapers, or blowouts! Plus, I feel good about doing something positive for the environment. My only regret with cloth diapering is not starting from the moment my oldest was born!
